>Adding a second hard disk, DVD, CDRW or
other IDE device.
This is intended as a guide and not step by step instructions.
What´s needed: Phillips screwdriver, tweezers or your fingernails,
motherboard manual to configure bios. If this is a new device it came with a
manual that will give you the info you will need to set the jumpers. If the
drive has been pulled it out of another system I will give you some clues on
where to look for jumper settings.
Part I: Jumpers
There are 3 positions that the small jumper can be set to.
MA=master is disk 0 on the IDE channel, SL= slave is disk 1 on the IDE
channel, CS=cable select can be used if there are no other disk on this
channel. (note-Unless you have a reason to do so, avoid CS. If the drive is
the only drive on the IDE channel, use MA.)
This is the back of a typical CDROM/CDR/DVD jumper settings and info is
usually found near the rear of drive or located on the top near the back.
On top of most IDE hard disk you can find info needed to
configure jumpers for master/slave settings Disk above says by setting J50
you can make this disk a master or a slave.
Flipping over the disk and closely looking you can see
where J50 is located.

Now looking from the back we can see the jumper for J50.
Leaving this jumper on makes this disk a master. Taking it off will make the
disk a slave.

Ok...that´s how you set jumpers for IDE devices. *Some
devices just don´t like each other and you might have to put them on
different IDE channels.
Part II: IDE
cable and channels.
Most motherboards have 2 IDE channels; 0 & 1. Each of these channels can
support 2 IDE devices one is called the master the other is slave.

Newer IDE cables can only be connected one way only
thing to worry about is lining up the pins because they bend easy.

The IDE cable has three (older ones might have two)
connector ends like you see above, one goes into the motherboard and the
other two go into your IDE devices.

The cdrom is usually located above the hard disk so plug
the far end of the cable into it and use the middle of the cable to connect
the hardisk.
After you connect both devices
turn the power to the system on and hit DEL, F2, or F10 see your motherboard
manual for info on entering the systems setup and adding new IDE devices.

Once again, thanks to imac, who wrote this tutorial and
took all the screenshots.
